The Colijn

Patience is a virtue.

De Colijn, a residential complex in 13 levels comprising 81 apartments, 3 penthouses, and commercial spaces located at the corner of P.C. Boutenslaan and H. Colijnlaan. The project was designed by Burobeb on the site of the former CBR building. Additionally, a parking deck has been constructed on the property.

In the design, the character and existing building height of Colijnlaan are utilized as the "Rijswijkse plint" (Rijswijk base) for the sculpture of the high-rise. On the four-level base, there is an all-around oriented tower of nine levels with its own distinct character and appearance. In this way, the architectural features of Rijswijk from the fifties and sixties are harmonized and reinterpreted in a design with a contemporary look.

The complex houses 19 types of apartments ranging from 55 m² to 150 m² with spacious outdoor areas. The facade and balcony finish of the four-level base consist of a double half-brick red masonry pattern with struck jointing. The fourth floor is clad with Steni Nature Carbon (SN305) in medium aggregate to enhance the transition between base and sculpture. The all-around oriented sculpture is clad with Steni Colour high gloss in project color RAL9016, in combination with the glass surfaces. The continuously expanding balconies of white-colored concrete are equipped with balustrades featuring extra clear glass and white enameled stripes integrated into them. This stripe pattern provides a view from the residence while also ensuring privacy on the balconies.

We were invited for our first Steni sampling in 2012 and the completion was in 2021. Ten years later, hence the title of this piece, 'patience is a virtue'.
