Ter Stege Tunnel, Olst

In 2023, a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel was completed under the Deventer-Zwolle railway in the Overijssel village of Olst. This allows cyclists and pedestrians to move more quickly and safely within the village. The tunnel is not only an asset for traffic safety but also features the artwork 'The Time Machine'.

Cheerfulness

Marina Nijdeken is the creator of this work. She involved many residents in its creation. Dozens of people from Olst were portrayed, and elementary school students helped with coloring the backgrounds. Nijdeken says, 'I drew inspiration for The Time Machine from ordinary people with their actually quite extraordinary stories. Everyone who contributed gave me inspiration. Through the nostalgia of the past, the speed of the present, and the ignorance of what is to come. But above all, through the cheerfulness, the color, and the joy.'

Salute

'The Time Machine' transforms a generic tunnel into a unique connection. The exuberant, colorful works are a salute to the residents and the village of Olst. They create a cheerful celebration of recognition and contribute to the sense of security for everyone using the tunnel.

Realization

The municipality of Olst-Wijhe commissioned M2uur bv to create a sustainable and vandal-proof art installation. M2uur bv digitized the designs and handled the layout. The print-ready files were executed on Steni Vision, a fiberglass-reinforced stone composite facade panel with a UV-resistant coating. Finally, the panels were securely attached to the tunnel walls using adhesive on aluminum box profiles, and finished all around with profiles.

Freekje Vervoord (M2uur bv): "It's fantastic that we can showcase art in public spaces in this way. Additionally, the artwork enhances the feeling of social safety. The durable Steni panels come with a 60-year warranty and are therefore excellently suited for such applications. In Scandinavia, entire facades are adorned with art in this manner. In the Netherlands, we tend to be a bit more cautious. In my opinion, it could all be a bit more exuberant and daring!"
