Britannia Residence

A Showcase of Heritage and Modernization
In the heart of Ghent, amidst historical heritage and modern architectural design, stands Residence Britannia. This iconic building was officially recognized as protected architectural heritage on June 20, 2023, underlining its historical and cultural significance. To preserve and modernize the grandeur of this property, a carefully planned facade renovation was carried out, led by ARCH & TECO, experts in creative, technical, and management services for the construction sector.
Architect and Contractor in Perfect Synergy
The architectural firm ARCH & TECO played a crucial role in developing a renovation plan that respects the historic character of Residence Britannia while also meeting the demands of sustainability and modern aesthetics. The renovation was executed by IBT Bouwtechnieken, a contractor specialized in technical construction solutions for complex projects. Together, they worked closely with the client, the Association of Co-owners Residence Britannia, to make the project a success.
Subtle Architectural Details
The facades of Residence Britannia feature a striking yet understated design, characterized by a simple cornice and artificial stone cladding. This cladding, reportedly supplied by the former tile factory Gerard Vandewalle from Roeselare, gives the building its distinctive appearance. The rectangular windows, equipped with continuous sills and embedded in horizontally recessed facade sections, provide a subtle yet elegant rhythm that accentuates the building’s long sides.
Heritage in a Modern Garb
This renovation demonstrates how historical heritage can be modernized with care and precision. By finding a balance between preserving original elements and applying innovative construction techniques, Residence Britannia remains an iconic landmark in Ghent.

Innovative Facade Cladding for a Timeless Appearance
One of the most striking aspects of the renovation is the application of approximately 2.000 m² of Steni Nature SN106 Fine. This facade cladding, supplied by Foran to Verhelst Bouwgalerij from Kuurne, was expertly screwed onto an aluminum substructure, including U- and L-elements. The use of Steni panels not only provides an aesthetically high-quality finish but also offers a low-maintenance and durable solution that withstands the test of time.
