Statenjachtstraat wins Steel Award 2024 in the residential construction category

In Amsterdam North, an existing tower block owned by Eigen Haard has been fully renovated to meet contemporary standards. New apartments have been added to the ends of the building, consisting of 2- and 3-room units. The block, with 112 apartments and 15 floors, received a total of 53 new units at its ends. A lightweight steel structure was designed with hollow core slabs only 150 mm thick to stay within the building height of the existing block.
The entire building, old and new, received a completely new sustainable façade. By adding senior apartments to the existing building, the project addresses current societal needs.

The multidisciplinary expert jury writes

“This project represents the construction challenge of the future: upgrading older, often dilapidated buildings and their surroundings into a transformation that truly stands out. The addition or bulging of living space on and against an existing apartment building has been done here with care: residents benefit from increased comfort without explosive, patchwork architecture. Thanks to the pleasant strip layout, restrained materialization, and use of color, the building naturally blends into the neighborhood. More than fifty homes have been added here. This was only possible with steel, due to its strength, stiffness, slimness, detailing, and construction speed. An excellent example of good use of steel in the increasingly urgent renovation challenge. Such initiatives deserve to be followed because they represent a societal gain.”
