First pile driven for a unique substation
At the construction site of the Liander electrical substation in Katwijk, the first pile was driven into the ground on Tuesday, February 4. This pile marks the start of the construction of a unique transformer building. What makes this building so special? The facade is designed to incorporate the archaeological finds that were discovered on the site in 2024.
Due to the area's rich history, archaeological research was conducted before the work began. Fascinating discoveries from the Roman era were made, including shards of Roman pottery and a cloak pin (fibula) from the first century AD. Additionally, a Roman-era human burial and a cremation grave with an urn, likely dating back to the early Middle Ages, were uncovered. These findings suggest that the location was used as a burial ground over an extended period.
